1891 The Chailey Industrial School for boys on the North Common, an institution under the management of the Brighton and Preston School Board, has occupied since 1875, the old buildings of the workhouse, which had been transferred in 1873 to new building at East Chiltington. Combined with Davenport Hill (Essex) and re-certified in 1916 for 155 boys in the new premises as Portslade School, Portslade.

Has been certified by the Board of Education. On the 6th September 1912 certified by the Home Office in two branches, Boys and Girls each with 30 children. In June 1928 the numbers were increased to 85 boys and 57 girls. Certified in June 1832. Became a voluntary home in 1935.

1903 - Superintendent and matron Mr & Mrs H. J. Glover; schoolmaster, Mr T. Brown; schoolmistress Mrs H.A. Brown. Mr A. J. Gaite left 10th August and was succeeded by Mr A. J. Walker 11th August 1902; assistant matron Miss Glover
